Yield to Worst (YTW)

Definition: The lowest potential annualized yield an investor can receive on a callable bond without the issuer actually defaulting.

Comprehensive Institutional Breakdown

For bonds with call provisions (where the issuer can redeem the debt early), YTW evaluates the lower of Yield to Maturity (YTM) and Yield to Call (YTC). Institutional fixed-income desks use YTW as a conservative worst-case scenario calculation for portfolio income projections.

Algorithmic Formula / Notation
YTW = min(Yield to Maturity, Yield to Call 1, Yield to Call 2, ..., Yield to Put)
Institutional Scenario Example
A corporate bond offering 6.5% YTM but callable in 2 years at 4.8% YTC has a Yield to Worst of 4.8%.
Cross-Market & Execution Note
Key metric when constructing fixed-income cash-flow reserves for retirement decumulation.
