Sortino Ratio

Definition: A risk-adjusted performance metric that evaluates excess return relative strictly to downside volatility, ignoring beneficial upside volatility.

Comprehensive Institutional Breakdown

Unlike the Sharpe ratio which penalizes both upside surges and downside crashes equally, the Sortino ratio isolates downside semi-variance below a minimum acceptable return (MAR). This makes it vastly superior for evaluating asymmetric institutional trading strategies that produce aggressive upside alpha.

Algorithmic Formula / Notation
Sortino Ratio = (R_portfolio - R_target) ÷ Downside Deviation (σ_d)
Institutional Scenario Example
Strategy A and Strategy B both have a Sharpe ratio of 1.2, but Strategy A has a Sortino ratio of 2.8 because its volatility consists primarily of outsized winning trades.
Cross-Market & Execution Note
The preferred risk-adjusted benchmark for Carl Brent Anthony's 1:2.5 asymmetric execution model.
