Sequence of Returns Risk

Definition: The critical risk that the timing of market downturns during early retirement decumulation causes catastrophic, irreversible portfolio exhaustion.

Comprehensive Institutional Breakdown

When an investor is decumulating (withdrawing cash for living expenses), experiencing market crashes (such as 1929, 1973, or 2008) in the first 3 to 5 years forces liquidations of depressed shares. Because depleted shares can never participate in the subsequent recovery, the portfolio runs out of money decades prematurely, even if long-term average returns appear adequate.

Carl Brent Anthony Institutional Rule
Insulate decumulation with 24–36 months of short-term liquid cash reserves to avoid selling depressed equities during cyclical drawdowns.
Algorithmic Formula / Notation
W_{t+1} = [W_t - Withdrawal_t] × (1 + R_t); Negative R_t early permanently degrades terminal capital W_T.
Institutional Scenario Example
Two retirees with identical 7% average returns: Retiree A experiences -15% in years 1-2 and exhausts funds by age 78; Retiree B experiences -15% in years 25-26 and dies with millions.
